3 Types of Sliding-Screen & changed paper;

*Three Types of Sliding Screen in my house*
You might be already familiar with these from somewhere or from my former post
We haven't renewed the paper type of the sliding screen since then. Let me introduce three different types of them in our really small house again.
This page shows you beautiful variety of Japanese sliding door.

 First one Fusuma-type  (Fusuma 襖)
As this type has ready-made design, we ask professionals to change the papers. Two of them on the right side are the sliding ones and bedding are in there. For left side one, we pull to open. This room is connected with next room.

  Second one Glass-type (glass fitted shoji; just called shoji)
We call second one and third one "Shoji 障子".  This shoji separates two rooms.
Third one Paper-type (paper fitted shoji; just called shoji)
Pictures of paper type shoji we've changed papers. I might be able to show you how terrible these were, haha decided not to.

                  How the changing paper work came out.
The work took almost whole day for us ;-)
Pictures above are from only downstairs, we've changed 8 of them.
If we try to change paper by ourselves, we buy them from "do-it-yourself store"; they are rolled to make the work of putting them on the frame work of shoji "障子" easier.  The pictures on the left are the one we bought. Normally changing after 5 years should be the standard or the best. 9 years has past since we changed them last.
As I said, ours were such terrible condition and couldn't wait p;-)

    How lucky "Common Bluebottle" came to suck water of the paper♪

Thank you so much for stopping by.  I always appreciate your sweet comments;

  1. Hi Miyako san. Your tatami rooms are beautiful with fusuma and shoji screens. Changing shoji paper is a big task. I can understand if took the whole day to do as you have eight screens! I remember helping putting new paper for screen at home when I was a child. I also remember cutting small pieces of paper (usually in flower shape) to fix small holes :-) What a beautiful butterfly visiting to have some water!
    Stay safe and well, Miyako san xoxo

  2. Dearest Miyako,
    Oh, I do remember those sliding doors with the rice paper while I was staying in Japan.
    It is just a division for the eye, not much of an insulation.
    But what a job for your husband to take them apart and putting new paper on from the roll.
    Beautiful butterfly you captured!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  3. Hello Miyako, greetings from the Philippines! Thank you very much for sharing these beautiful photos and meaning behind these Japanese doors. I was blessed to have stayed on a traditional Machiya house in Kyoto and it was an amazing experience to be living on such a work of art for three days.

  4. There's something to be said for doing things yourself and being satisfied with the outcome! The butterflies are so pretty. I didn't realized they would drink from a paper towel.

    Your corner is beautiful this week! Thanks for sharing it at the 'My Corner of the World' link up.

  5. As I imagine with paper division screens, there is no sound barrier throughout the whole house? Meaning, you can't have a private conversation, except for a whispering one? Would have to adjust to that:) The new ones look very pretty and clean! That must have made your day to be able to capture this very pretty butterfly! Many thanks for including All Seasons in this very practical change in your house, Miyako! Wishing you a joyful week, Jesh

  6. Miyako - all of us have home improvement projects that are overdue! I can imagine why you might have delayed this project - it looks complicated. But how lovely when it is finished. And a blessing to see the butterflies as part of the work! Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday, as always!

  12. This is so interesting to see how much work it takes to change the paper. I have wondered how your hands do not make the paper tear apart when using doors every day. Ellen in Ohio
