Kanmon Straits; place of Two wars of Old and New etc;

Kanmon Strait Bridge (bridge between Kyushu and Honshu)
Although it was a bit cloudy day when we visited, made me think about the history of my prefecture.  (pictures are not from recent ones but haven't posted)

Dannoura (壇ノ浦) at Kanmon Straits (関門海峡)is the place where Two Battles of old and newer ones occurred. It's located between my prefecture and Fukuoka-pref.

The Shimonoseki Campaign (下関戦争)
Shimonoseki Campain ←link   This war happened from 1863 to 1864, to control the Straits by joint naval forces from 4 countries.  "Sonno-joi movement. 尊皇攘夷"  the principle of advocating reverence for the Emperor and the expulsion of foreigners was deeply related with this war.

 Genpei  War  (源平合戦)
Genpei War ←link   This was a conflict between the Taira-clan(平)and Minamoto-clan(源)which happened during the late Heian period (1180-1185).  Also know as Battle of Dannoura (壇ノ浦の戦い). At school , we learn a proverb (my direct transration) "Arrogance like Taira-clan's won't last long. 驕る平氏は久しからず".    The equivalent for "Pride goes before a fall." in English.

For Flower and Critter Links
Pictures of the flowers were taken at my friend's garden and inside the front door.
For Critters link; Eileen and edenhills.  I found the butterfly 'Pseudothemis zonata'  at the little pond near my house. My husband's lady band member sent me the stag beetle's picture 'Lucanus maculifemoratus'  It's a season to see them♪
Wishing you will have a wonderful rest of the week.

  2. It was great to read about your history. The Genpei monument looks great and the contrast between the old world and the new is so well captured & told by the bridges. Have a lovely day.

  13. Interesting post Miyako -- I always learn something from your posts -- my knowledge of your country's history is poor, but I am learning from you. The equivalent saying to 'pride goes before a fall' was fun to learn -- probably, that is something parents all over the world teach their children!

    The flower, butterfly and beetle pictures are all excellent.

  17. I always enjoy hearing about the history of other lands and found your post very interesting, especially the similarity between our "pride goes before a fall" saying and yours.
    Your photographs and mosaics are lovely, the frames that you chose to enhance the photos are beautiful.
    Thanks for being a part of Mosaic Monday again this week.

  19. I apologize for being so late to visit Miyako. I am sad that there is so much much remains of war around the planet... We are all one species and should act like it....Michelle
