Rectangle or Square...

Husband's New Soba Plates (posted in Soba Noodle link-page)

This type of squre plate is kind of popular for serving noodle in Japan. He wishes me to mention again here that the woods weren't coated with anything to let them absorb the water from noodle.

  1. I say, rectangle! Nice looking boards, Orchid. The soba noodles look good, too. xo

  3. They are gorgeous! I do think the older ones are more rectangular and the newer ones square, but I love their symmetry and design. You have wonderful taste!

  5. Dearest Orchid,

Your husband is quite an artist at making those! Love the rectangular ones but the squares are also very neat. When not seen side by side, either one of them works just fine!
Please do pass on a sincere compliment from Georgia/USA.
By the way we had yesterday a meeting with the International Committee and there was a complaint for not having any requests from Japan for being a one year college student through Rotary. The Rotary district in Georgia (ours) is already for 52 years sponsoring each year quite a number of students for staying on year at college and with a host family during the holidays. I was thinking of you right away. We do have a huge YKK plant here for aluminum windows and such for big hotels and banks. So there is a good Japanese mix in our society here.

    Love to you,

    Mariette

  9. Hi dear friend in the East! I personally like the square ones (the newer ones). The wood is lovely, and I like the grain. I am wondering how you clean the plates afterwards. Do you still wash them in the usual way? It's always good to hear about things from your part of the world. Hope you enjoy your weekend. Sending hugs and warmest wishes. x

  12. These wooden plates for noodles are lovely. Your hubby does wonderful work. Not only does he make the noodles but the plates to serve them on. He's very talented. Have a great weekend my dear friend. Hugs

  13. They both look great and functional. In the restaurant business, the kitchen crew would clean the butcher block by pouring straight bleach on it. Wondering how you clean these as well? Hugs!!

  15. I absolutely love both versions, square and rectangular! Something completely novel for us in the Western world and I'd love to eat your husband's soba noodles off such an earthy plate.
